Why buying leads is a recipe for disaster

When you buy leads from an agency on a cost-per-lead basis, the majority of leads come from Google AdWords or Microsoft Advertising. These campaigns work by bidding on keywords that people are searching.

Every day, the agency will go through their campaign keywords to see which keywords bring in the lowest-cost leads. The agency prioritises low-cost keywords and avoids bidding on keywords that generate expensive leads…

They have to do this to make money, because expensive leads eat into their margins. The problem with this? Expensive leads are the leads that the bigger companies are bidding on. Why?

Because the bigger companies have the data at hand that shows them how big of a return these keywords generate in terms of sales. These bigger companies know that cost-per-lead is irrelevant – it’s the cost-per-sale that matters.

So, what happens is… your agency stops bidding on these expensive keywords in order keep the cost-per-lead low and make a bigger profit. As a result, you’re left with the leads that come from cheap, low-intent keywords.
